Hong Kong Stages Almighty Cricket Upset

Hong Kong beat Bangladesh, one of the top 10 teams in international cricket, in the opening phase of the World T20 tournament to record a stunning upset in the southeastern Bangladeshi city of Chittagong.

After bowling Bangladesh out for 108 in 16.3 overs, Hong Kong dragged itself to victory with just two balls remaining in its innings as No. 9 batsman Haseeb Amjad hit a six in the final over to seal the biggest win in Hong Kong's history.

Before Thursday's match, Hong Kong had never beaten any of the 16 teams taking part in the World T20, ever. It had never even qualified for a major tournament before.

In its first two matches in Chittagong, Hong Kong fell to Nepal, another so-called minnow of world cricket, and Afghanistan. Only a wild optimist would give the team any hope against Bangladesh, the host of the tournament and a Test-cricket playing nation.

Thursday's result is the equivalent of a goldfish beating up a deep-sea tuna. (You can keep your David and Goliath metaphor.)

The victory, however, wasn't enough for Hong Kong to qualify for the next stage of the tournament, the Super 10s, which features the really big teams -- sharks, if you will -- of the cricket world, such as India and Australia.

If Hong Kong had managed to reach Bangladesh's total sooner, Nepal would have qualified for the Super 10s instead of Bangladesh - the host narrowly avoided the embarrassment of being kicked out of its tournament before it really began.

The International Cricket Council expanded the World T20 this year to allow the minnows, or associate (less established) cricket nations, a chance to play on a bigger stage. Hong Kong seized the opportunity on Thursday, as did Nepal, which was part of an upset too as it beat Afghanistan in the first match of the day.

Afghanistan has been on an upward trajectory in world cricket recently, but this past week has been a disappointment. In addition to Thursday's shock defeat to Nepal, Afghanistan got a thrashing from Bangladesh in the World T20's opening match on March 16.

In the final standings from the opening week, Afghanistan was third in group A, behind Bangladesh and Nepal but ahead of Hong Kong thanks to its better net run rate.

The final standings in group B will be decided Friday, and Ireland is in pole position to follow Bangladesh into the next stage of the tournament. The Irish are unbeaten in a group that also includes Zimbabwe, the Netherlands and the United Arab Emirates.

The action also moves to the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka on Friday, where rivals India and Pakistan will play each other tonight in the first genuinely big match of the tournament. Bangladesh is in their group, along with Australia and the West Indies, who won the 2012 tournament. If Ireland wins Friday, it will join a group with Sri Lanka, New Zealand, England and South Africa in the next round.
