'From Vegas to Macau': Seems Like Old Times

Welcome back, Mr. Chow. We've missed you.

Audiences in Asia have had the good fortune these early days in the Year of the Horse to be able to line up for a good old-fashioned Hong Kong movie starring Chow Yun-fat. The wait, as they say, has been worth it.

In 'From Vegas to Macau,' Mr. Chow plays Ken, a renowned gambler with a playful wit who knocks off opponents at the card table with the ease of an expert assassin. Ken is a happy man: He has a devoted daughter, a loyal hound, and a James Bond-esque home - lethal arrows zing from a suit of armor - in Macau.

But there's trouble in the 'hood, and the police roll in to seek his help in bringing down the ruthless master of an international money-laundering organization. Ken's weapon of choice is a deck of razor-sharp gold-plated cards that he flings with the precision of a poison-dart thrower. (Semi-automatic rifles are much too crass for this card shark.)

The movie is a big wink at the 'God of Gamblers' (1989), one of Mr. Chow's most popular movies, in which he played a celebrated card player, and which launched numerous sequels and spinoffs. (Wong Jing, the smooth veteran of lowbrow humor and high-powered action, directed both movies.)

Two decades have passed since Mr. Chow starred in a pure Hong Kong movie: comedy, action, drama - and the occasional musical number - all in glorious Cantonese.

Sure, he's starred in a string of blockbusters since 1995's 'Peace Hotel,' his last major Cantonese-language movie. There's been 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,' 'Let the Bullets Fly' and 'Anna and the King,' to cite just a few. But those and others have largely been Mandarin- or English-language movies.

Moviegoers who grew up on a steady diet of Mr. Chow's movies from the 1980s and 1990s - a period affectionately referred to now as Hong Kong's Golden Era - know that he has a few more tricks up his sleeve than just a Beretta 92F pistol. He's as skillful in playing slapstick as he is in playing a cool-as-ice hit man, and he matches George Clooney beat-for-beat in the irresistibly-charming competition.

'From Vegas to Macau' offers Mr. Chow the kind of role that made him a star in the 1980s. Even the movie's poster harks back to the earlier era.

But that was then. For now, though, it seems like old times.

自那以后,他参演了一系列商业巨制,例如《卧虎藏龙》(Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon)、《让子弹飞》(Let the Bullets Fly)和《安娜与国王》(Anna and the King)。
