Russia Wins Its First Gold Medal

Russia won its first gold medal of the 2014 Winter Games Sunday night in a new team figure skating competition that showed it has deepened its talent bench two decades after the collapse of the Soviet Union-and that it can score an important victory at its own Olympics.

Russian President Vladimir Putin was on hand to soak in the win, cheering from the stands for 15 year-old Yulia Lipnitskaya, a rising star who swept the women's singles portion of the team event.

The Olympics started off on a disappointing foot for its host country this past weekend, with two missed opportunities at medals in the biathlon and skiathlon. But the Russian team found its footing Sunday afternoon, first with a bronze medal in speedskating, then in luge, biathlon and a crown jewel-a gold in a sport in which it has trailed other countries over the past two decades.
At the Iceberg Skating Palace on Sunday night, Russia soundly defeated Canada and the U.S. to top the podium in the team event, in which 10 countries fielded one man, one woman, a pair and an ice-dance team, plus substitutions, to compete for a medal. Russia's team featured both one of its most beloved athletes as well as some up and coming talent.

Yevgeny Plushenko, who as a four-time Olympian is a national hero in Russia, dazzled a rapt audience with a performance that was both restrained and stunning. It was just enough for him to win in a field that lacked top rivals such as Canada's Patrick Chan or Japan's Yuzuru Hanyu, who beat Plushenko in the team short program.

Plushenko was followed by Yulia Lipnitskaya, a 15 year-old rising star who racked up points in a dramatic free skate program set to 'Schindler's List' with solid jumps and by twisting and stretching her body like a pretzel into impossible-looking spins. The choreography puts her youthful flexibility to Russia's advantage. With her early-teen body, she can handle the Biellmann spin-in which a skater pulls a foot behind the back and directly up overhead, rotating on the standing leg-a difficult element that racks up points fast.
Russia also turned in strong showings in pairs skating-a discipline it has long dominated-as well as in ice dance, in which Elena Ilynkh and Nikita Katsalapov won a standing ovation from an enthused crowd by skating to-what else? Swan Lake.

As the 10-member team mounted the gold-medal podium, the crowd packing the stadium waved flags and chanted, 'Rossiya, Rossiya.'

Still, while the Russian skaters said they were inspired by the fans, the crowd was anything but wild. The stands began emptying before the flower ceremony honoring the athletes. Ms. Abramyan and co-worker Elena Ionova managed to buy their 2,500-ruble ticket only hours before the performance, at an Olympic ticket kiosk near the snowboard event they were attending.

In downtown Sochi, a modest crowd of several hundred at a public viewing site initially didn't notice; a live band distracted attention from the big screen. When later informed by an announcer of the gold, light applause and a few whistles accompanied a small, regularly-scheduled fireworks show. But while a few women hugged, most of the crowd watched the fireworks in silence, some of them merely aiming their mobile phones at the sky to document the moment.

The crowd of a few hundred thinned quickly, with few remaining when Putin appeared on the big screens briefly before his signal cut out.

Canada finished a distant second to Russia with strong performances by ice dance pair Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir.

Americans Meryl Davis and Charlie White won the free program in ice dance and Gracie Gold came in second in the women's competition, solidifying a bronze medal-one of only two medals the U.S. may win in figure skating here.

The gold was one of four medals Russia won Sunday, led off by Olga Graf's bronze in 3,000-meter speedskating. The Omsk native credited a raucous home-team crowd. Fans waved flags, honked horns and chanted 'Olya, Olya' as she moved past the Russian-filled sections of the stands.

The wins followed two disappointments for Russia since the Games opened. In the biathlon, Anton Shipulin and Evgeny Ustyugov, who both won medals in Vancouver, disappointed Russian fans Saturday at the men's 10k sprint, finishing empty-handed.

Russia also missed a bronze in men's cross-country skiing by a tenth of a second on Sunday when Maxim Vylegzhanin came in fourth behind Norway's Martin Johnsrud Sundby. Vylegzhanin almost overtook Sundby at the finish line, but fell just short, drawing a big groan from the crowd. Russia unsuccessfully protested the results.
