T.a.T.u., Pop Duo with Lesbian Image, Set to Play Opening of Winter Olympics
女子组合T.a.T.u.

The opening ceremony at the Winter Olympics on Friday will feature floating cathedral domes, giant magic horses, and the music of a Russian pop duo that built its image around being lesbian.

Word of the appearance of the duo, t.a.T.u., has caused a stir given the controversy in recent months over a law that bans so-called 'gay propaganda' among children.

Details of the opening ceremony are a closely guarded secret. But two people familiar with the matter say Russia's team will enter the stadium to the music of t.a.T.u, made up of Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova. The group will perform at the warm-up show that won't be broadcast internationally, the people said. The Russian team will then file into the stadium to the sound of their 2003 hit 'Not Gonna Get Us.'

The song was a rare hit for a Russian group outside the country, reaching No. 7 in the U.K. charts and No. 1 in the U.S. dance chart.

The group has a controversial history. The lyrics and video of 'All The Things She Said,' the duo's 2003 hit, were suggestive of homosexuality and bisexuality. 'I'm losing my mind. I need her,' the chorus goes.

At the time, t.a.T.u had the public image of two lesbian schoolgirls. One later married a man, while the other had a baby with a male partner then divorced.

The duo faded from the international spotlight, but 10 years later it appears they are back in vogue, despite a recent law banning words or actions that condone 'non-traditional relationships' in front of minors. The vague wording of the law means it could be applied to people of the same sex kissing in front of minors, activists say.

Some local legislators have complained that stars like Madonna and Lady Gaga broke the law. But even though every t.a.T.u fan remembers them best for the passionate kiss they shared in school uniforms in the music video, it seems unlikely anyone will complain about what's seen as the most important public event in Russia for decades.

The duo had posted on their Twitter that they'd be performing at the opening but later removed the post and has refused further comments. State television Channel One, whose producers and directors are staging the ceremony, also declined to comment.

The rest of the ceremony will focus on Russia's history from ancient times through Imperial Russia to the Soviet era, according to the people familiar with the plans. Church domes will float above the newly-built stadium, giant magic horses will glow in the sky, and Russian heavy weight boxing champion and the lawmaker Nikolai Valuyev will perform as Uncle Styopa, a benign giant policeman from a Russian children's book.

t.a.T.u. 之后,俄罗斯代表队将在t.a.T.u. 2003年热门歌曲"Not Gonna Get Us"的乐声中走进体育场。

t.a.T.u. All The Things She Said"的歌词和音乐视频带有同性恋和双性恋的暗示内容。 (I'm losing my mind. I need her.)

当时,t.a.T.u.

然而尽管t.a.T.u.
